Belgian delegation reports on Mogilino

11/02/2008

The Belgian delegation has returned from their fact finding visit to Bulgaria and has released a report of its findings. The delegation of government ministers, accompanied by TV presenter Chris Dusauchoit, visited the Mogilino Institute during the five day trip and declared concern over the level of improvements made to the childrens lives since intervention started in November.

Hugh Russell from TBACT, on in his third trip to Mogilino since December said in response to the Belgian comments ' There are signs of improvement to the children medically, with most of them putting on some weight due to the improved nutrition and medical attention. Some of the children have received essential medical treatment for the first time in their lives. But the children are still unoccupied for periods of the day which causes concern to everyone involved. We have recently funded 3 additional occupational therapists for Mogilino to assist the Unicef team who are leading the rehabilitation process there. The situation has been hampered by a number of staff leaving the institute in recent weeks. However, the assessments of every child in the home are continuing and will be completed by June.
