TBACT Trustee, Kate Blewett, along with her colleagues Brian Woods and Jezza Neumann from True Vision Productions won the BAFTA for the best current affairs programme at Sunday's glittering awards ceremony in London. Their film 'China's Stolen Children' documents one couple's search for their 5 year old son, who along with 70,000 Chinese children every year, was kidnapped by traffickers.
Treasuring her award, Kate said 'Our films aim to give people a voice. We want their story to be heard despite, very often, their governments' efforts best efforts to silence them. With both 'China's Stolen Children', and 'Bulgaria's Abandoned Children' the government's response has been to deny the issues we raised and try to undermine the films because if they acknowledge it they would then they would be forced to address what is going on. Thankfully we are starting to see progress in Bulgaria but we have to keep up the pressure.'
It is yet another award for Kate, who has been received over 50 awards recognising her work including 5 EMMY's, one of which was for her seminal film 'The Dying Rooms' in 1994 which also exposed the tragic consequences of China's one child policy.
Jezza Neumann, director of China's Stolen Children, gave possibly the most poignant speech of the evening, saying: 'Currently the Chinese government are more intent on rounding up Tibetan protesters than they are in finding their own stolen and trafficked children. Two years on since he was snatched the little boy at the heart of our film is still missing. So as you drink champagne tonight spare a thought for a young couple in the migrant worker town of Kunming, who like thousands of other families that are victims of trafficking are still waiting for their happy ending.'
